Turkey Sloppy Joes

A healthier twist on the classic sloppy joes using lean ground turkey, simmered in a tangy and slightly sweet tomato-based sauce, served on hamburger buns.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound lean ground turkey
  • 1 can tomato sauce (15-ounce)
  • 0.25 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 buns hamburger buns, toasted
  • Optional toppings: shredded lettuce, sliced pickles, cheese for serving

Preparation Steps

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper; cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Add garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.
  • Add ground turkey; cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until no longer pink, about 5–7 minutes.
  • Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, and black pepper.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  • Serve warm mixture on toasted hamburger buns, topped with lettuce, pickles, or cheese if desired.

Notes

For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or diced jalapeño with the onions and peppers.
