Sugar Cookies

Classic sweet and buttery sugar cookies, perfect for holidays or any special occasion. Easy to make and fun to decorate.

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 2 sticks
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon almond extract optional
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  • Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters and place on prepared baking sheets, spacing 1 inch apart.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden. Do not overbake.
  • Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

These cookies are perfect for decorating with royal icing or sprinkles. Store in an airtight container for up to one week.
