Instructions
Preparation Steps
Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until soft and caramelized, about 30-40 minutes.
Add the beef broth, salt, sugar, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for an additional 20 minutes.
Preheat the broiler. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls and place a slice of bread on top, then sprinkle generously with Gruyère cheese.
Broil until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.
Notes
This French Onion Soup is best served hot and enjoyed with some extra cheese and bread on the side!
