French Onion Soup Recipe

A classic French Onion Soup made with deliciously caramelized onions, beef broth, and topped with melted cheese and croutons.

  • 2 lbs yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 4 cups beef broth use low-sodium if possible
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1 tsp sugar to enhance caramelization
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 4 slices French bread toasted
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese

Preparation Steps

  • Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until soft and caramelized, about 30-40 minutes.
  • Add the beef broth, salt, sugar, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for an additional 20 minutes.
  • Preheat the broiler. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls and place a slice of bread on top, then sprinkle generously with Gruyère cheese.
  • Broil until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.

Notes

This French Onion Soup is best served hot and enjoyed with some extra cheese and bread on the side!
