Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C), butter two 9-inch round cake pans, and line their bottoms with parchment.
Whisk the sugars, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a large heatproof bowl. Add the boiling water and whisk; cool for 5 minutes.
Blend in the oil and melted butter, then the eggs, yolks, and vanilla. Mix in the flour, milk, and sour cream just until combined.
Divide the batter between the pans and bake 29 to 34 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean or with moist crumbs.
Cool the cakes in their pans for 5 minutes, then invert onto a rack and cool completely.
Trim the cakes if needed, frost between the layers, then frost the top and sides. Store airtight.
Notes
Cool the cake layers completely before frosting so the buttercream stays smooth.
