- 4 tablespoons butter divided
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups milk warmed
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
- 3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Heat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
Gradually whisk in the warm milk. Add the salt and ground mustard, and cook until the sauce thickens.

Fold the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce, then spread it in the prepared dish.
Melt the remaining butter, toss it with the bread crumbs, and scatter them over the macaroni.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until bubbling at the edges and golden on top. Rest for 5 minutes before serving.
